Are you protecting your eyes?

Did you know that your eyes can be damaged by the sun’s harmful UV rays?  Long term exposure to UV rays without proper protection can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyes and other conditions.  Short-term exposure, including reflections off snow, pavement and other surfaces, can burn the surface of the eye, similar to sunburn of the skin.

How can you protect your eyes from the sun?

If you wear prescription glasses your lenses most likely protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.  If you do not wear prescription glasses the best way to protect your eyes from the sun is to wear sunglasses.  Sunglasses should be worn everyday when you are outside, even on cloudy days, to protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes.  Contact lens wearers may have UV protection in their contact lenses, but should also protect the skin around the eyes with a pair of sunglasses.
